One of the most popular events in the holy town of Vrindavana, India - where Lord Krishna appeared 5,000 years ago - is the celebration of Jhulan Yatra, the Radha-Krishna swing festival.
For four days, small Deities are taken from the altar and placed on an elaborately decorated swing in the courtyard of the temple. The courtyard is very artistically decorated with flowers, plants and with the aid of coloured lights it creates an out of the world experience. The ambiance is so created to facilitate the swinging pastimes of Sri Sri Radha Madana Mohana. Members of the congregation are invited to participate and swing the Deities to and fro. Each person offers flower petals and personal prayers, and then swings the deities to and fro several times as the other members chant Hare Krishna in kirtan. The atmosphere of this festival is especially sweet as everyone has the chance to intimately serve Radha and Krishna.
